Beyond 26

Julian could tell Saoirse didn’t believe him. He quickly clarified, “Actually, I’m reclusive because my parents have been so focused on their careers. that they didn’t take good care of me. They are always traveling for business and conferences. Sometimes, they don’t come home for a whole month. Since my injury isn’t severe, they most likely won’t come this time.”

Seeing that he wasn’t wearing the expression he had on when he lied, Saoirse believed him a little more. “So, aren’t you going to tell Georgina?”

Julian suddenly became anxious as he rushed to clear up his relationship with Georgina. “She’s not really that concerned about me. It’s just that I used to like her a lot, and she enjoyed the attention I gave her, which is why we were close.”

Saoirse was surprised to hear this. It turned out Julian was similar to her- they were the ones who were inferior in the relationship. Thinking of how he pursued Georgina while she ignored him, Saoirse couldn’t help but feel a sense of vindication.

“An evil person will always pay,” she thought, almost smiling but holding it back due to the situation.

Picking up her things from the table, she coldly stated, “Since you got hurt saving me, I’ll take responsibility for taking care of you while you’re hospitalized. Just focus on recovering. I’ll be going now.”

Julian was going to tell her to stay. Upon hearing her words, he agreed to it with a surprised smile on his face.

“I’ll take good care of myself. I’ll be waiting for you to come.

Saoirse didn’t respond further and hurriedly left the room.

As Julian waited with anticipation, Madeline came in carrying a thermal container.

All the anticipation he had throughout the night came to nothing. As Julian looked at this elder, Julian’s expression immediately became more

guarded.

He cautiously asked about Saoirse. “Mrs. Madden, may I know where Saoirse is?*

Madeline placed the items she brought on the table and glanced at him. * Saoirse is at work and doesn’t have time to visit you. From now on, I’ll be the one coming. If you need anything, let me know.”

Julian’s heart sank at those words. His tone, too, grew dejected. “Is she really too busy to come?”

Although Madeline had a slightly altered view of Julian for risking his life to save her daughter, it wasn’t a significant change. She opened the lid of the container and handed him the chicken soup.

“She won’t come even if she’s not busy. After all, you’re just her ex- boyfriend. She no longer has feelings for you. Seeing you might just upset

her.”

Julian knew Madeline was speaking the truth, but he still found it hard to accept. With a trace of sadness flickering in his eyes, he uttered, “I don’t want to disturb her. I just can’t let go of the past. I want to give it another

go.”

Although Madeline didn’t know the specifics of what happened between the two, her heart turned harder than stone when she remembered the look on Saoirse’s face. She spoke the words she had been holding back.

“No matter what happened in the past, it’s all over now. Saoirse is a kind- hearted person. As long as you don’t push it, she will always compromise. For her to cut ties with you this time means that the issues between you have exceeded her tolerance. If you truly cared about her, how could you let things get this bad?”

Faced with Madeline’s questioning, Julian knew he was at fault. He couldn’t explain himself.

“Things have come to an end between you two. Don’t force it anymore. If you continue to cling to her, you’ll only deepen her hatred toward you. You’ve already gone from being lovers to strangers; do you really want to
